Building Its Foundation: Prada Unveils Project Plans

Building Its Foundation: Prada Unveils Project Plans. Luis Zargani. WWD. 04.18.08.

excerpted text and quotes:

"Prada chief executive officer Patrizio Bertelli and Miuccia Prada unveiled Rem Koolhaas’ blueprint for the new Fondazione Prada headquarters and gallery on Thursday during the Salone del Mobile international design and furniture exhibition. Bertelli and Prada, who created the nonprofit organization in 1993 and have collected more than 500 works by contemporary artists such as Anish Kapoor, Tom Sachs and Sam Taylor-Wood, will invest 25 million euros, or $36.5 million at current exchange, in the project." (Luisa Zargani)

"I’ve rooted for this for so long, and it’s finally happening,” (Miuccia Prada)

"They are demanding yet cultured and refined clients who love to experiment." (Rem Koolhaas)
"I’ve never been told that any of my designs was ever too ambitious," he said, noting their "search for quality and experimentation". (Rem Koolhaas)

"We are sophisticated enough that our work is not a simple reflection of the personality or mentality of [Bertelli and Prada." (Rem Koolhaas)

"Koolhaas 'embodies the spirit of experimentation,' Bertelli said. 'And Prada’s fashion is also about experimentation.'"

"Celant said the new gallery will allow the foundation to plan collaborations with international museums and support smaller museums. 'This will be a technologically avant-garde exhibition machine dedicated to contemporary culture but also suited for historical pieces,' said Celant."

"Bertelli, who hopes to find sponsors to partly finance future exhibitions, said, 'We want to enjoy collecting art works [and] cultivate the relationships with artists in our search for original, free and fresh ideas.'"
