Karl Lagerfeld

"Lagerfeld Digest". Text by Alex Hawgood. T - The New York Times Style Magazine. Spring 2008.
excerpted text:

"Karl Lagerfeld's interest in architecture isn't limited to his many houses, as two new books of his architectural photographs so elegantly illustrate. "Karl Lagerfeld: Thee examples of 20th Century Modern Architecture" is a heavy-duty box set showcasing three of the most distinctive buildings in the world: Curzio Malaparte's Casa Malparte, Perugini's La Casa Albero Nella Pineta di Fregene and Tadao Ando's Vitra Conference Pavilion. "Konktret Abstract Gesehen," on the other hand, finds our ponytailed polymath taking grainy, abstracted shots of sidewalk cracks, straircases and other fragments of urban existence. Despite his passion for architecture, Lagerfeld suggests that he has no plan to design a house anytime soon: "Fashion, photgraphy, books. That's all"".

"Mulberry is hoping to turn shipping into more of a high-brow experience. The British brand has lined up a program of collaborative events at its London Bond Street flagship for 2008. The store - which Mulberry has dubbed the Bond Street Gallery Space - will host a series of exhibitions, including Gethin Moller sculptures, Martin Richman light installations and an in-house exhibition curated by East London's Fred Gallery to coincide with the Frieze Art Fair in October".

Louis Vuitton / Murakami

"Louis Vuitton's Original Take on Fakes". Text by Marc Karimzadeh. WWD.04.03.08.
excerpted text and quotes:

"But rather than simply hand out leaflets to alert guests about the importance of protecting original design, the French luxury goods house will be taking a novel, somewhat intriguing route. Outside the museum, Vuitton is setting up 10 New York-style street vendors - not to sell fakes, but rather authentic Louis Vuitton product and special Monogramouflage canvases that Murakami has created specifically for the exhibition."

"We think that by highlighting it in a happening way and not in a boring way, it will make everybody more aware". (Yves Carcelle, Chairman and CEO of Louis Vuitton)

"Its educational because it puts millions of people in contact with artists that they probably never would have known". (Yves Carcelle, Chaiman and CEO of Louis Vuitton)

"We are expecting a big impact, but i don't think  anyone had imagined that nearly six years later, it would become one of the new eternal pillars of the vocabulary of Louis Vuitton". (Yves Carcelle, Chairman and CEO of Lousi Vuitton)

Jackson Pollock

"Jack the Dripper". Text by Armand Limnander. The New York Times Style Magazine / Men. Spring 2008.
excerpted text and quotes:

"Like James Dean and Marylin Monroe, Pollock has entered the canon of American icons not just because of his artistic accomplishments, but also thanks to the myth surrounding his tortured life and premature death. (Many have surmised that even if he had survived the car crash, his severe alcoholsim woudl have killed him). No wonder fashion designers keep bringing him up: he's the archetype of the all-American, ruggedly handsome, bottle-swinging man with plenty of talent and a (well-hidden) sensitive side".

"A year ago, Hedi Slimane Borrowed Pollock's drip artwork for Dior Homme; in the late 90's, Helmut Lang started a trend of paint-splattered denim, sending enthusiastic imitators to their garages. (As with Pollock's art, the do-it-yourself versions never quite matched the original). This season, Stefano Pilati at Yves Saint Laurent refreshed the action-painting look with pants, shorts and shoes smudged with practically every color in the Benjamin Moore catalog: in New York Adam Kimmel took a complementary approach, focusing not on the abstract expressionist's artwork but on what the artist actually wore".

"Pollock famously said that modern art is the expression of the contemporary aims of the age we're living in. I find that very inspirational, because every generation has to deal with issues in its own way. His work was the result of a true need to express, and with jeans, T-shirts and overalls, he embodied the idea of a man as creator. He was at the forefront of existential masculinity".(Adam Kimmel)

Inez van Lamsweerde "The Politics of Beauty"

Inez van Lamsweerde "The Politics of Beauty". Interview by Penny Martin. Foam #13. Winter 2007.
excerpted quotes:

"By that show, we were kind of done with photography as a 'photograph on the wall'. We were also not so excited by what other people were doing. Usually, my work is a reaction to what I see around me, either in the art world or any other cultural world. Usually, I feel there us a dialogue between other artists and myself. But three years ago, I didn't want to talk to anybody!".

"So we had to find abother idea. Vinoodh and I talked with my uncle, Eugene van Lamsweerde, who is a sculptor living in  France. Since he was a young artist, he has been heavily influenced by Joseph Beuys and the more spiritual, spatial approach clicked with us, so we started collaborating. The first thing we did was The Endless Head, a portrait of Amanda Harlech (Muse to Karl Lagerfeld) that we later showed in multiple variations as part of The Sceance in 2006). "

"Now, I don't know that many people that are politically involved. Nor do I know many that are involved in spiritual activity. It seems as if our culture has moved away from those two elements being considered important to the generation below me. What I would love to achieve is for certain spiritual or political awareness to become cool again, without it requiring an MTV-style aesthetic or appeal".

"The idea of showing things that are related to death is so attached to imagery from various underground movements, where eberyone who wants to rebel uses a skull  as a symbol".

"Elements keep reoccurring. That's why it's hard for me to live in the art world only".

"It's so true. We always say that at least in the fashion world we know it's about money! I get paid for a job, and I do it as well as I can, within the limitations of the brief or brand's vision. It's very clear. But in the art wolrd, it's even more about money, without anyone saying so. It has changed over the past few years, a lot, in terms of the business that it's become. The kinds of people that buy art now are very different".

Cosmic Wonder "Light Source 2"

Cosmic Wonder. Sleek #18. Spring 2008.
excerpted text:

"Cosmic Wonder Light Source 2 is the latest installation by Japanese designer Yukinori Maeda. A plywood installation serves as a light source, illuminating plywood structures on clothing sprinkled with pieces of silver foil that pick up the light and reflect it. The space, the clothes - everything emanates from the light, and is enveloped in it; structures dissolve and discharge themselves into the boundless cosmos of Cosmic Wonder Light Source".
